Why your developer asks for this

Most website bugs only show up on some setups. A button that works in Chrome on Windows may not respond in Safari on an iPhone. A layout that looks right on a laptop can break on a tablet. Before your developer can fix a problem, they need to see it for themselves, and that starts with knowing the browser, version, operating system and screen size you saw it on.

Sending these details with your first message saves a round of ‘which browser are you on?’ emails and gets the fix done sooner.

What each value means

  • Browser and version: the app you’re using to view the site, such as Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, and its version number.
  • Operating system: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux or ChromeOS.
  • Device type: desktop, tablet or mobile.
  • Screen resolution: the size of your whole display.
  • Viewport: the visible area of the page inside the browser window. This is what the layout responds to.
  • Pixel ratio: how many physical screen pixels make up one CSS pixel. High-density screens use 2 or 3.
