The PageProofer browser extension
The PageProofer extension lets you and your team use PageProofer on a website without adding any code to it. Install it, click the PageProofer button in your browser’s toolbar, and PageProofer appears on the page, just like it does with the embed code.
It’s perfect when you can’t add the code yet: the developer hasn’t got to it, the site is on a platform you don’t control, or you just want to start leaving feedback today.
Install the extension
Chrome
- Open PageProofer in the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome, then Add extension.
- Click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar and pin PageProofer so the button is always in view.
Microsoft Edge
Edge can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open PageProofer in the Chrome Web Store in Edge.
- If Edge asks, click Allow extensions from other stores, then Allow.
- Click Add to Chrome, then Add extension. It’s installed in Edge, even though the button says Chrome.
- Click the puzzle piece icon in Edge’s toolbar and pin PageProofer with the eye icon.
The extension uses your normal PageProofer sign-in, so there’s no separate account or password. If you aren’t signed in when you click the button, the extension opens the PageProofer sign-in page in a new tab. Sign in, go back to your website’s tab and click the button again.
Use PageProofer on a website
- Go to the website.
- Click the PageProofer button in your browser’s toolbar.
- PageProofer checks which of your sites uses the website’s domain and loads it on the page. Click the PageProofer button on the page, or the toolbar button again, to open it and start leaving notes.
Everything works the same as with the embed code: notes, screenshots, screen recordings, #tags, @mentions and keyboard shortcuts. Your site’s settings, like the button’s position and label, carry over too.
The extension only runs when you click it, so click the toolbar button again after you go to another page.
Prefer the keyboard? You can give the extension your own shortcut. Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts in Chrome or edge://extensions/shortcuts in Edge, find PageProofer and set a shortcut for Activate the extension.
If the website already has the PageProofer embed code, the extension doesn’t load a second copy. Clicking it simply opens or closes the PageProofer that’s already there.
Add a new site in one click
If you’re an account admin and the website you’re on isn’t in PageProofer yet, the extension offers to add it for you, no settings page or code required. See Add a site with the browser extension.
Who can use the extension
The extension is for people on your PageProofer team: anyone who has been invited to the site can use it. It’s included on every plan, including during your free trial.
Your clients and guests don’t need it. If you want clients, guests or website visitors to leave feedback without signing in, add the embed code to your website. The extension and the embed code work happily side by side, so you can start with the extension and add the code later.
Good to know
- The extension works in Chrome and Edge on desktop computers. For phones, tablets and other browsers, use the embed code.
- It works on
httpandhttpspages, not on browser pages likechrome://or the Chrome Web Store. - PageProofer finds your site using the domains in Site Settings, including
*wildcards. If more than one of your sites uses the same domain, the extension picks the first one you have access to, so give each site its own domain. See Site Domains. - Some websites, like x.com, have strict security settings that block tools like PageProofer from loading. If that happens the extension tells you.
- The extension only sends the address of the page you’re on to PageProofer, and only when you click the button. It never runs in the background or reads pages you haven’t clicked it on.
If PageProofer doesn’t load
When something stops PageProofer loading, the extension shows a message in the top right corner of the page:
- None of your PageProofer sites use the website’s domain: none of the sites you’ve been invited to list this domain. Check the domains in Site Settings, ask an account admin to invite you, or, if you’re an admin, add the site from the message.
- You don’t have access to the site: you haven’t been invited to this site, or you’re a guest on a site set to Only invited PageProofer users.
- PageProofer has been disabled for the site: the site is set to No one, disable it, or it has been archived.
- The PageProofer account for this site is not active: the account’s trial or subscription has ended.
- This version of the PageProofer extension is out of date: your browser is already updating it. Wait a minute and try again.
If the toolbar button shows a red !, hover over it to see why. It usually means you’re on a page the extension can’t run on, like a browser settings page.
